Brother ST150HDH Sewing Machine Review

In this review, you will find out all the details on this new Brother sewing machine.

Overall Sewing Performance

Brother ST150HDH Review

The Brother ST150HDH easily handles sewing on a wide variety of fine (silk) or heavy (denim) fabrics. It also performs well on thicker layers of fabric.

The Brother ST150HDH is the worthy successor to the Brother ST371DH sewing machine. Always so comfortable to use and to take in hand, the Brother ST150HDH is intended above all for beginner designers. However, its many features and stitches will also delight more seasoned couturiers. The Brother ST150HDH is a great machine that is sold for a very affordable price.

The Brother ST150HDH is one of the most popular sewing machines for both novice and experienced dressmakers alike. It also brings several ergonomic improvements that have been proven on other models of the manufacturer. The machine is even easier to use and we particularly appreciate its comfort for sewing long hours.

Ease of Use

The machine has an LCD screen that allows you to select and view important information. With the backlit LCD screen, it is very easy to see on the screen which type of foot is needed depending on the type of seam chosen. Indeed, the Brother ST150HDH screen allows you to display the selected sewing stitch, the presser foot to be used, or the length and width of the selected stitch. The control panel is very practical to start sewing with peace of mind.

To make life easier for dressmakers, the positioning of the bobbin case allows quick and easy installation of the thread. In addition, with its completely clear view cover, you can easily keep an eye on your bobbin as you sew to see how much thread you have left on the spool.

If necessary, the feed dogs can be completely lowered so as not to get in the way when sewing. This feature is particularly useful for button sewing or to facilitate free movement of the fabric when sewing with the dedicated presser foot.

It is possible to tune the tension of the thread of the machine with a simple numbered adjustment wheel located just above the sewing area. This will allow you to get a nice and even seam. While sewing, if loops appear on the right side of your fabric, reduce the upper thread tension. Conversely, when loops appear on the wrong side of the fabric, increases the tension.

The machine is perfect for anticipating thread changes during sewing. The needle plate has guides and several graduations to help you make beautiful seams in all circumstances.

We also like the start/stop button to start or stop sewing at any time, a thread cutter accessible on the end of the machine, and the button for positioning the needle up / down to raise or lower the needle of the fabric.

For storing your needles or for quicker access to your sewing accessories, the Brother ST150HDH sewing machine has a small removable storage compartment that, when removed, allows access to the free arm of the machine. The free arm is particularly useful for sewing rounded pieces of fabric such as pants, sleeves, or bags. Just slide out the accessory compartment on the left side of the machine to free up space.

Sewing Speed

The Brother ST150HDH is an upgrade to the Brother ST371HD in the speed aspect. While the latter has a maximum speed of 800 stitches per minute, the ST150HDH has 850 SPM maximum sewing speed.

The Brother ST150HDH also offers the possibility of sewing without foot control while the variable speed control allows complete control of the sewing speed. For those who have trouble mastering the sensitivity of the pedal or who sew for several hours, this feature offers real ease of use. The design of the Brother ST150HDH has also been changed to accommodate the knob just under the LCD.

Brother ST150HDH Review

Built-in Stitches and Buttonhole Styles

As was already the case with the Brother ST371HD, the new Brother ST150HDH sewing machine still has more variety of stitches to easily satisfy every seamstress. It offers 50 stitches including 5 automatic buttonholes in one step.

Some of the stitches include straight stitch (left), straight Stitch (middle), triple point elastic, elastic stitch, zigzag stitch, 3 steps elastic zigzag stitch, overcasting stitch, invisible stitch, elastic invisible stitch, folded edge stitch, satin scallop stitch, patchwork stitch, double patchwork stitch, snake stitch, hemstitch, narrow round buttonhole stitch, narrow rectangular buttonhole stitch, elastic buttonhole stitch, old fashioned buttonhole stitch, keyhole buttonhole stitch, and more.

Thanks to the hook and the new, more robust metal frame of the machine, the stitch quality have been further improved on this model. The stretch seams will be sewn with precision whatever the fabric used and with the different decorative stitches, you can easily decorate your projects.

Lighting

The Brother ST150HDH has a single LED light that is very bright for nighttime or low light workshops. However, this light can be blinding. The LED light comes up when you put on the machine and can only go off when you put the machine off. The machine should have been designed for the light to be switched off or dimmed at will.

Durability and Warranty

The Brother ST150HDH, like its younger Brother, remains a durable, strong, and heavy-duty machine for its price. The frame is made of metal while it is covered in durable plastic. However, at just 10lbs, this is a lot more lightweight than the Brother ST371HD, which is 4lbs heavier.

Like most of this Brother sewing machine series, the Brother ST150HDH is backed up with a 25-year warranty. The electronic parts of the machine however come with five years of warranty. It also includes free technical support by phone throughout the lifetime of the machine.

Key Features

The Brother ST150HDH has features that will make sewing even easier and more fun for any beginner or advanced user. Some of them include:

  • Stitch length and width easily changeable: The stitch length and width can be easily changed using the adjustment knobs located near the LCD screen. In this way, the stitch width can be adjusted up to 7mm while the stitch length can be adjusted up to 5mm.
  • Powerful LED lighting: The powerful LED lighting will provide uniform illumination of the sewing area to work comfortably even in low-light rooms. Although, many users complain that the light is too strong, non-adjustable, and cannot be switched off even during daylight.
  • Automatic needle threader: To improve its model, Brother equipped the ST150HDH with an automatic needle threader which makes threading the needle easier. The hook of the automatic needle threader and the eye of the needle aligns perfectly to pass the thread in seconds.
  • 9 presser feet: As standard, the Brother ST150HDH comes with nine presser feet to let you quickly expand your creative project ideas. It includes the zigzag foot (on the machine), buttonhole foot, overlock foot, monogram foot, blindstitch foot, zipper foot, button foot, and more. There are only six on the 371HD. You will therefore not need to spend more to equip yourself with your first accessories.
  • Several accessories: Asides from the feet, the Brother ST150HDH sewing machine contains several other interesting parts and accessories to start sewing. You’ll have a seam ripper, a twin needle, an additional spool pin, a cleaning brush, a set of needles for stretch fabrics and jeans, a screwdriver, a flexible protective cover, an instruction manual, and more.

Price Tag

The Brother ST150HDH comes a little bit more expensive than the Brother ST371DH. However, it’s still sold for an under $300 price. The difference in price between the 371DH and this is about $30.
